Staff Engineer / Engineering Manager

Fully remote · EST

Summary

Software engineer and engineering manager with 14+ years building software products and platforms. Combines hands-on architecture and implementation with coaching, technical direction, and cross-team delivery. Experience spans APIs, search reliability, permissions, content systems, and AI-powered metadata.

Uses Claude Code and Codex throughout research, planning, and implementation while retaining responsibility for architecture, review, and validation. Helps engineers adopt those workflows through open demonstrations, individual coaching, and practical projects.

Experience

Wistia

May 2022–Present

Engineering Manager

March 2025–Present

  • Coached senior and staff engineers, supported growth planning, delegated initiative ownership, and guided technical direction while continuing hands-on implementation.
  • Co-led modernization of content-management workflows, organized parallel implementation, and coordinated cross-team dependencies.
  • Led technical scoping and initial implementation for My Library across authorization, queries, search, and APIs. Led delivery of a limited-access Viewer role across permissions, provisioning, account limits, and user workflows.
  • Took a hackathon prototype into production for self-service recovery of media, folders, and channels. Designed and optimized an AI metadata platform and historical backfill.
  • Helped engineers adopt AI through discussion, open demonstrations, individual coaching, and working prototypes.

Staff Software Engineer

August 2024–March 2025

  • Owned backend integration and internal customer-support tooling for multi-account workspaces across GraphQL, subscription validation, and reporting. Enabled a premium add-on while preserving free access for existing workspace customers.
  • Owned search-personalization investigation, proposal, implementation, initial rollout, and A/B-test foundations.
  • Researched transcript-search feasibility and vendor-capacity constraints, recommended alternatives, and contributed to hiring and technical interviews.

Senior Software Engineer II

May 2022–August 2024

  • Conceived and led sampled search-consistency monitoring and automated repair, with account-aware indexing, backfill tooling, and static-analysis guardrails.
  • Designed reversible per-account search migration that avoided feature-flag checks in the search request path.
  • Built content-organization and subfolder capabilities across asynchronous migration, GraphQL, React, bulk operations, uploads, navigation, and drag-and-drop.

X-Team

November 2015–April 2022

Lead Software Engineer — Beachbody

Client assignment through X-Team

  • Architected and led delivery of a Node.js and TypeScript federated GraphQL gateway connecting independently owned services for web, Android, iOS, and Roku client teams.
  • Led the primary data API’s migration from REST to GraphQL, introduced runtime caching for a complex upstream CMS, and re-architected core React surfaces.

Senior Software Engineer — Riot Games

Client assignment through X-Team

  • Improved internal video-transcoding and localization pipelines.
  • Built a React Native and Expo app prototype that was later incorporated into production iOS and Android apps.

Intellisys

March 2012–October 2015

Software Engineer — Condé Nast

Client assignment through Intellisys

  • Worked remotely with several Condé Nast magazines on a replatforming initiative, contributing to rebuilding legacy web systems and shared functionality with Node.js and modern JavaScript.

Selected work

Making search data dependable

Wistia

I led a search-data integrity initiative that combined sampled monitoring, automated repair, and account-safe indexing. It made consistency something we could observe and maintain as the product changed.

Private libraries inside a shared platform

Wistia

I led technical scoping and initial implementation for My Library, carrying private-content rules through authorization, queries, search, and APIs while working within an existing collaboration model.

A common GraphQL API

Beachbody, through X-Team

I architected and led a federated GraphQL gateway for independently owned services. I also led the primary API’s move from REST to GraphQL and added caching that reduced repeated upstream work.

From prototype to self-service recovery

Wistia

I took a hackathon prototype into production so customers could recover media, folders, and channels themselves.

Helping engineers adopt AI

Wistia

I helped engineers bring AI into everyday development through discussion, open demonstrations, individual coaching, and working prototypes. I shared what worked, what failed, and how I reviewed the results.
